1. Tennis Ball
l Studies have shown the fluffier a ball gets, the slower it flies which is why you often see top players such as Tim Henman check several balls to find the least fluffy before serving.
l When not in use, tennis balls should be stored in the can they came in.
l This won't prevent them from losing pressure, but can slow it down.
2. Tennis Shoes
l Unlike running shoes, proper tennis shoes allow for side-to-side sliding.
l Added side-support is crucial to keep your foot stable even when playing shots on the run.
l Some players like to have extra ankle support, so mid-cut shoes are a good option. Breathable mesh insets in the leather will also make the shoes less sweaty.
l Women tend to have higher arches in their feet than men so female players should look for extra support underneath the arch.
l Choose cushioned socks that give extra protection to the bits of your feet that take all the impact - the ball and the heel.
l This spongy cushioning also absorbs sweat, taking it away from your skin making blisters and conditions such as athlete's foot less likely.
3. Tennis Outfits
l Don't be swayed by labels when it comes to choosing your gear.
l For instance, tight-fitting tops look good for girls, but it may be more comfortable to wear a looser shirt which is more breathable.
4. Tennis Courts
a. The Australian Open
l It is the first Grand Slam event of the year - and is used as a benchmark for the rest of the season.
l The tournament is played on a specially-designed hard court surface called Rebound Ace.
l Hard court surfaces are made of asphalt or concrete and covered with coloured acrylic paint mixed with sand to give it texture.
l Unlike on grass and clay, the bounce and the speed of the ball is consistent - which makes it ideal for beginners to play on.
l Hard court surfaces are considered a great leveller.
l Many of the top seeds have been knocked out during recent years at the Australian Open.
l They complained that the surface was too sticky, leading to injuries.
l Others put the injuries down to the timing of the event with players not having had enough time to recover since the end of the previous season.
b. The French Open
l The distinctive red suface of clay is made of crushed brick packed together and covered with a loose, rough layer.
l This causes the ball to stick to the court, slowing it right down.
l It also gives the ball a big bounce - with players often having to play the ball at shoulder height or above.
l This gives players more time to reach the ball and makes it harder to put shots away.
l It's difficult to win points with one big shot.
l That's why patience is a virtue on clay courts.
l Indeed, research shows that rallies measured at the French Open are longer than at any other Grand Slam event.
l It is not unusual for a rally to last 10 to 15 strokes, compared with two or three on grass.
l Because the ball has such a big bounce on clay, it is important to play the ball deep and to put plenty of spin on it.
l The slippery surface can force players to skid into shots and points can often be won by wrong-footing your opponent.
l Like grass, clay must be watered
c. The Wimbledon
l From the slow clay courts of Roland Garros, the Grand Slam series heads straight for Wimbledon which has the fastest of all the playing surfaces - grass.
l Wimbledon is the only major tennis tournament in the world still to be played on grass.
l It gives the ball a low bounce which can also be very unpredictable.
l You can never expect the same bounce twice on grass.
l Because of the low bounce, players with short, compact strokes that do not need as much time to prepare have an advantage.
l Those who can mix up their game, using slice as well as top spin, drop shots as well as lobs, also do well.
l Fast, powerful shots are also very effective on grass.
l Big servers such as the 2001 champion Goran Ivanisevic have even more of an advantage.
l And players who can back up their serve by attacking the net ready to volley away a weak return are best suited to grass.
d. The US Open
l The US Open, played at New York's Flushing Meadows, is the final Grand Slam event of the tennis year.
l It's also the richest tennis tournament in the world with over $17m of prize money up for grabs in 2003.
l It is played on a green hard-court surface known as Decoturf.
l At the US Open though - it is often the raucous atmosphere and not the playing surface that wrong-foots the players.
l Maybe that's why it's sometimes referred to as the world's toughest tennis tournament.
l It's certainly the biggest.
l The Arthur Ashe Stadium holds 23,000 spectators - and they can sure be intimidating.
l Britain's Greg Rusedski was completely unnerved when the Flushing Meadows crowd got behind his opponent Todd Martin three years ago.
l After being in control he ended up losing the match after the crowd started hurling abuse at him.
l Added to the noise of the crowd, planes from nearby La Guardia Airport also used to take off right over Flushing Meadows.
l The US Open also features night matches played under floodlights - and that can also have an affect on some players.
l Bjorn Borg, who won 11 Grand Slam titles during the 1970s and early 1980s, never won the US Open because he could not stand playing under floodlights.

My Tennis Plan 2005
After playing with my new racket for several games, I cannot say it is my perfect match yet. Well, I gain more power from the racket but at the same time I lose some control on the strokes too. Compare with the rackets, the differences are:
a. Pure Control use high rip string which can hold the balls in the racket for a little bit longer time and enable me to decide which way the ball shall go, while the AreoPro use Timo 18 has less friction and I hit more flatter ball with it, and find difficulties in hitting short drop shot in front of the net. Some adjustment of the form is required for the new racket (I hit less accurate with AreoPro)
b. Pure Control vibrates madly when hitting drive volley or drive return, but AreoPro is very solid with not vibration at all for drive volley.
c. Pure Control is very easy to slice down the ball in a volley, AreoPro usually bounces long and high (part of the reason is I do not really know how to slice).
d. AreoPro is more powerful in serving and easier to play back hand strokes – it surely has helped my back hand strokes
e. AreoPro is more difficult to produce top spin than Pure Control (may be due to difference in strings rather than the racket)
In order to take the benefits of the power from the new racket, my short term goals of my games include
1. Improve control in ground strokes by adjustment my form.
2. Increase my back hand successful rate up to over 70%, and try to control the balls directions as far as possible.
3. Improve first serve successful rate and second serve power
4. Change my form to hit volleys.
There are a lot of things to do, nevertheless, I feel this new racket gives me opportunity to grow (if I can complete the above goals), so up to this moment I still think that I am correct to buy the AreoPro – at least it make me happier than the old racket.

ATP Roger's Final - Nadal VS Agassi
Hi Vicky,
Thanks for the video DVD. I watched them finished after our tennis last night. I would say the match demonstrated excellence.
Agassi is great. His technique is so mature and so consistent that he really can threaten Nadal – even more if he is younger and with more pace. I think his double backhand is wonderful that he can keep the power, the angle with so more control but with so little swing movement, I do not know how he can do it and I think nobody can mimic him too. Agassi also showed excellent sportsmanship that he had no argument to any questionable line calls. He just accepted them.
Yes, Nadal is the better one in the game, and from this game I firstly find out that Nadal is not only equipped with his muscles and pace, he also has the very much talent in his brain in playing his games. Apart from his very strong topspin, he has added to his weapon very powerful first serve. He is also a player with excellent control over the ball even when he is defending, which many times has surprised his opponents with his defending winners. Across several match I have found that Nadal has extremely low unforced error in each match, and this is his secret of success?
I do really think that Nadal possess the chops to win over Federer in the US Open. However, before that we may want to see
1) Nadal VS Roddick in round 3
2) Hewitt VS Gasquet in round 2
The draw table seems favour Federer?

Tennis Match on 13 March 2005
People asked me to report on the tennis matches yesterday, how shall I
write? My brain was totally blank when I was in the match, and I was too
nervous (or concentrate?) in helping the Umpire for line watching that
hadn't noticed how the other players performed (in details) in their
matches!
OK, I can talk on my own matches, and the mysterious novel starts below.
The first match was with Duncan. I saw him playing in previous matches with
others before, and I knew that he is a skilful and tough guy. I knew I had
no chance to win him, but still would like to know how far our difference
would be.
I did the first serve in the first game. Luckily, I served not bad though
not very good, but it passed the net and dropped in the serve box anyway.
Good start. Duncan hit back and I return and on and on (actually no idea of
details, he he he). Goddess of Luck was on my side, as he didn't notice my
weakness (a $5000 secret), and Duncan was confused with my style of playing
too that he couldn't outplay me with his better skill, something like "a rat
wants to pull a tortoise", his power was exercised but on nowhere......
Four games finished with several deuces, and 2-2.
The fifth game started with big big problems. A consecutive THREE double
faults, ends with 40-null. What happened to my Goddess? Duncan, did your
Evil Devil seduced away my Goddess? I could see your face was so cool......
bing bai ru san dao 兵敗如山倒, the fifth game ends quick, so quick that it
finished after I accidentally blink my eyes on the flying ball....... 3-2.
The six game, my god, not yet finished? I was exhausted since I could only
play 15 minutes in every game / match! haleluya....Duncan you were going to
kill me but I wouldn't allow you to beat me easily. If I should die, I
should die with glory (of a professor of something............, no no no,
not hero, definitely wrong word).
No matter how hard I fight back, or how sweet that I smiled to Duncan, he
wouldn't let me go. All of a sudden, the six game ended and 4-2.
End of match.
Alright, you are better and you win the game. What? don't bother me OK? I
was in bad mood.....555555 (hey, 5 is a funny number, why? the Chinese
pronounce 5 as wu which is a crying sound so means sad, but the Thais
pronounce 5 as ha which means happy!)
Anyway, resting time...wait a minute, what do you mean I can't rest? I have
to play with Elsa again? It is not fair! OBJECTION! Ivan, I paid you $500
on Thursday, didn't we have some arrangement? OK, tell me how much Elsa
pays you spooky head (it is how my little son called me)
Elsa's match details.....TOC (please see Table of Content.......Oops, I mean
to be continue).

RE: ?? : ??: Tennis Match on 13 March 2005
Hi dear,
Yes, yes, I'm here. Quite busy this morning. Have to get my lunch now
before going to Wan Chai for a meeting. Just went to see a doctor due to my
seriously hurt wrist after yesterday's match...wearing a wrist support even
at work.
Stanley - too early to say that I'm your greatest competitor, not sure I can
win Dave this week....don't know...my wrist but will try my very best...if I
lose, I can save $500! Your description of your match with Duncan is really
interesting, I had a good laugh on reading it.
I don't mind singles, but I'm concerned about my partner, Peter, who may be
disappointed at my performace. I can only try my best.
Have to rush now....
Good day!
Vicky

Hi Ivan,
I am making jokes only, not serious.
But the tight schedule in day 2 worries me.....yes greatest competitor. So
what will be Vicky's match after playing with me? I want to see whether I
can get some money from Vicky, hello, hello, Vicky, are you there this
morning? If you want to win me more easily I want $500! Think about it as
this can save you a lot of chocolates.
I think I do not have a chance to go to the final so god cares about how's
the schedule!

I know Vicky know my weakness, but how do I play my game will more or less
decides how much power she has to use to win me, that why worths $500!
No, I didn't read the schedule at all.....sorry, it seems not so respectful
to your hard work, but you can blame me as I always get friends who knows
things well and tell me how to proceed!
